Parents' help with their child's school work is very valuable and children make better progress at school. It is best if you can find a quiet place for them to do their homework and make sure that it comes back to school on the correct day. Homework is sometimes marked altogether and if your child has forgotten theirs then they miss a valuable learning opportunity.
Literacy and Numeracy homework is normally given every week and children usually have several days to complete. Homework is usually something that has already been taught but if your child has difficulty with any piece of homework encourage them to speak to the teacher.
Teachers often organise a time for extra help to explain the homework again.
Sometime homework focuses on the Literacy or Numeracy targets. Each child has a target to meet; this is something that they need to be able to achieve so they can make progress. Ask your child about their targets.
Sometime homework is an opportunity to practice tables or spellings. These are easier to learn if you are able to help them. Also daily reading is important. Children are more likely to want to read if you sit and share the book. Listen to them read then discuss the story, the characters and the pictures.
In September there is a Welcome Letter which tells you allabout the topics to be covered during the year. It would be beneficial to your child if they could be encouraged to find out more information about these topics using the local library or the internet.
If you are concerned about helping your child at home please contact the school to make an appointment to see the class teacher.
